MAP AND COMPASS
The ability to navigate using non-digital, non-electric tools will prove to be a valuable skill to present and future generations.
The skills are simple, and the tools affordable; a new way to explore your natural environment in any season.
When the earth, or large sections of it, loose the electrical capacity to communicate with the global satellite system, GPS devices will be rendered useless.
An Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) would cause such an event to happen. The EMP could be the result of Nuclear Detonation, an EMP specific weapon, extreme Solar Activity, or an Impact Event.
We are the first to note that map and compass may not be what comes to mind while in or following an EMP event. After these massively disruptive occurrences , survivors will need to navigate a world forever changed.
Extreme damage to electrical grids and their sources of power generation…and the lights go out. When the lights stay out long enough, chaos will ensue. Cities will become filled with panic as crime goes crazy and fear of the night returns. Food will spoil and becomes scarce. Traffic grids will become parking lots as modern cars go off-line and stop functioning. Everything electrical simply ceases to function. Heaters, air conditioners, cardiac machines, street lights, trains, planes, phones…all gone.
As survivalists we anticipating these future days. We are leaving the cities now. Looking north for land that we can hunt, farm and fish on. We are self-reliant, self-sufficient, self-preservationist.
We are able to move through the forests and down the rivers using a map and compass, or just map, or just compass. Perhaps we already know the land we travel and no longer require a map. We can read the land, the topography on sight and judge distance accurately. We can move silently at night using only map and compass to guide us to our objectives.
The ability to move with and use the land you occupy gives you a large advantage over arriving newcomers, or threats. Being able to explore unpopulated wilderness, remote forest or mountains could be the skill you need to break free from the pack.
